Please join us on October 27th, for a conversation on Preserving Indigenous Languages, Knowledge and Culture with Indigenous Languages Commissioner Ronald Ignace as he shares his vision for the newly created Commissioner’s office and further takes us on a journey to explore the role language plays on the path to reconciliation. In connection to his role as the first Commissioner of the Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, he will discuss how the Indigenous Languages Act came about and what the Commission heard from Indigenous language experts and speakers in Kamloops this summer.  

Commissioner Ignace is a member of the Secwepemc Nation and served as chief of the Skeetchestn Band for more than 30 years, beginning in the early 1980s. As an alumni of the University of British Columbia, he holds a bachelors and masters in Sociology and completed his PhD in Anthropology at Simon Fraser University, with a dissertation on Secwepemc oral history. From 2003-2005, he chaired the Ministerial Task Force on Aboriginal Languages and Cultures, and from 2016-2021, co-chaired the Assembly of First Nations’ Chiefs Committee on Languages, where he played an instrumental role in the development of Bill C-91, the Indigenous Languages Act. 

Please note, we will be serving a light breakfast. Entry will cost $25 per person and $10 per student; payment will be collected at the door.
