February 22, 2021
Dear friends and neighbours,
You are invited to attend my next virtual MP Brunch Connections –“Reversing Canada’s Tragic Forest Management Trends” on February 26th with our special guest speaker, my husband Dirk Brinkman, of Brinkman Group.
Historic management practices and climate change have led to tragic trends of increasing pest and fire outbreaks in Canada’s forests. The pace of forest science’s gradual shift from industrial forestry towards Ecosystem Based Forest Management is too slow to meet today’s forest threats. So-called ‘old growth’ forests exhibit qualities of pre-contact pest and fire resilience that are actually the deliberate result of millennia of indigenous stewardship. The combined emergence of the adoption of UNDRIP and Nature-Based climate projects in Canada offer a radical reconciliation pathway to restoring our forests through integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge with forest science.
Dirk’s decades of work in forest restoration give him a unique perspective on practical emerging mechanisms for restoring forest health and community well-being, factors so critical to a just and sustainable future for Canada.
From a tree planting start-up in the 1970’s, Brinkman Group has planted 1.5 billion trees and been a leader in many elements of forest management, including co-managing forests and understory food production with rural and indigenous communities.
Please bring your questions to this policy discussion, and – be prepared – you may never see our forests the same way again!
This will be our 9th virtual MP Brunch - continuing the tradition of bringing community members together, despite the pandemic keeping us apart.
