This month we are hosting the third of our MP Brunch Connections series, with another virtual event on a topical public policy issue. Please join MP Joyce Murray's team and guests in a conversation on “Re-Starting Canada’s Economy: the difficult choices ahead” with our special guest speaker, Dr. Michael Devereux. Dr. Devereux has recently co-authored a research paper on Canada’s post-Covid economic recovery and will share his perspective on the types of re-start trade-offs that may be required. Should Canada reduce government spending, maintain support for Canadians, consider new tax measures, invest to stimulate the economy, and/or implement other options? What are other countries considering for their economic road ahead?
Michael B. Devereux is a Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC) and a former director of the Vancouver School of Economics at UBC. His research is in the area of International Economics, and International Financial Markets. Born in Dublin, Ireland, he came to Canada in 1981 and completed a PhD in economics at Queen's University 1985. He has held positions at the University of Toronto and Queen's University. From 2003-2013, he was a Bank of Canada Research Fellow. He has had visiting positions at numerous universities in Asia, Europe and the United States, and acted as a consultant for the US Federal Reserve, the International Monetary Fund, and the Bank for International Settlements. In 2010, he was the recipient of the Canadian Economic Association’s John Rea Prize for the economist with the best 5 year track record in Canada. Currently, he is a Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge MA, and at the Center for Economic Policy Research in London, UK.
Pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee, and be ready to learn and discuss options for navigating Canada’s post-crisis future, while continuing Vancouver Quadra’s tradition of community connections, even from a distance!
