June 29 MP Brunch Connections on Anti-Black Racism
June 22, 2020

June 22, 2020

Dear friends,

We are following our first virtual MP Brunch Connections event with an equally topical and important discussion! Join MP Joyce Murray in a conversation on “How Canadians can uproot Anti-Black Racism and systemic discrimination - this time!", with our special guest speaker, Dr. June Francis. Dr. Francis will share her thoughtful perspective on Canada’s journey, and how we can translate the momentum of the Black Lives Matter movement seen across North America today into lasting, positive change for Black (and all) Canadians. We will be joined by Parliamentary Secretary MP Greg Fergus, Chair of the Canadian Caucus of Black Parliamentarians. Since its founding, this caucus has been a voice for Canadians of African descent in Parliament and seeks to provide federal solutions to issues of discrimination.

Associate Professor of Marketing at SFU, Dr. Francis is also Co-Founder of The Co-Laboratorio Project and Director of the Institute for Diaspora Research and Engagement at SFU, Co-Chair of The Hogan's Alley Society and a leading expert on racism and community. She is very active in local, national and international collaborations to advance community well-being and cultural and human rights, through her research, teaching, consulting, media presence and as a volunteer. June has won awards for both service and teaching excellence, winning the Beedie School of Business Canada Trust Teaching Award, the inaugural Beedie School of Business Service Award in 2019 as well as recognition from The City of Vancouver, The Province and The Congress of Black Women.

This Brunch will be an inspiring opportunity to hear from someone who has lived with, studied and thought deeply about the racism. So, pour yourself a cup of tea or coffee, and be ready to learn and discuss the role that we, both as a country and individuals, can play in the creation of a more equal society.

Welcome to the second of our virtual Brunch series - continuing the tradition of community connection, even from a distance.
