Jericho Lands Planning Program Launch March 2nd
February 26, 2019

Dear friends and neighbours,

You may have already received a notice from the City of Vancouver - Local Government inviting you to the Jericho Lands planning launch event on March 2nd. If not, I want to make sure you’re aware of it, so that if interested, you can have early input into the shape of this significant development in the midst of Vancouver’s west side.

Since 2013 my work has aimed to put the future of Jericho Lands – a 36 hectare property located in the West Point Grey Neighbourhood – onto your radar. My many meetings with an expert advisory group, community members, owners’ representatives, senior project leaders and the responsible federal ministers, have served my singular goal of ensuring this project has the best outcome possible for all concerned. More than 600 local residents expressed interest in being consulted. My message has been consistent: let’s celebrate the historic local indigenous ownership stake in Jericho, let’s set the stage for a world-class sustainable vision, and let’s work diligently to ensure members of the broader community have a meaningful say, from the outset, into this transformative development project.

On June 24, 2018 Vancouver's City Council endorsed commencing the Jericho planning program, at the request of the joint owners of Jericho Lands: MST Nations (composed of Musqueam Indian Band, Squamish Nation and Tsleil-Waututh Nation) and the federal Crown Corporation, Canada Lands Company (CLC).

The joint owners have confirmed their commitment to develop the full 36 hectares – both the former provincial parcel, and the former federal (DND-owned) parcel of Jericho lands – in one coherent planning process. In addition, I have been assured the owners are committed to a development process that is both inclusive and collaborative. This process will be unique in Canadian history, representing a high level of involvement and cooperation amongst all the interested parties: the federal government & local First Nations owners, the City, and members of the public.

Residents of Vancouver respect the important long-term indigenous connection to these lands; they appreciate the site's current mix of forest, green space, historic buildings, military family housing, and the education, recreation and social services; and they want Jericho's next chapter to serve the community's values and aspirations for a sustainable future.

I hope to see you on March 2nd at the planning launch event co-hosted by the City of Vancouver, MST and CLC.

Details:

March 2, 12:00 - 4 pm (launch and open house)

March 7 4:30 - 7:30 pm (open house)

Only by working together can this unique and important site be transformed into something our region's citizens, indigenous and non-indigenous alike, will be proud of for generations to come.

Best regards,

Joyce Murray MP
